When I was 12, I once spent an entire day staring at a coin…
…trying to make it float in the air ‘cuz I wanted to impress a girl.
I failed obviously.
But whoever said, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure,” had no idea how badly a seventh grade boy wants to catch his crush’s attention!
While some of you probably had some better, smoother and Austin Powers’ groovier moves to charm the pants off a girl, I’m pretty sure you’ve all tested the limits of your mind – just to make sure you don’t have some unknown superpowers.
When you’re a kid, and everyone around you says you can accomplish every god damn thing you put your mind to, you don’t waste time dreamin’ about becoming the richest man alive someday; you dream about discovering your ability to fly, controlling others with your superhuman brain or becoming invisible – so you could watch the girl next door taking a bath without getting caught, naughty you!
On a serious note though, as adults, we’ve got used to the idea that we don’t have any telekinetic ability we can abuse, but we still secretly believe that we pose some special powers that help us achieve whole lotta things.
These powers may not make us superheroes (or supervillains), but they are perfect for making you become filthy rich.
Having said that lemme get something straight first: having the wrong mindset is keeping you poor as shit.
Focusing on everything you lack is the easiest way to go broke.
Now, I’m not sayin’ you should follow the advice of self-help books or motivational guides – ‘cuz you will find a lot of BS there too. But there is some advice you can follow to make dollar bills rainin’ down on you.
I’m a super-lazy guy. Like so lazy I’d rather get stuff outsourced or hire people to do all sort of things for me.
To give you the idea about extent of my laziness, even now as an adult, in winter, when I gotta pee, I often wish, damn, maybe there was someone who could do it on my behalf!
However, when I want something badly enough I INDEED get off my ass and overcome every possible obstacle that might come along the way.
That’s why I get pissed off when people send me messages like, “Hey man, can you please help me set up my Facebook ads campaign?” or “Can you tell me how to rank my site?”
As much as I like sharing my knowledge, I wonder, don’t these people have the desire to search and learn for themselves?
I mean, nobody told me how to set up a Teespring campaign, I had to read a lot of shit, everything was done by me and one day I finally figured it out – I had the fucking desire.
In East, they have a saying, A thirsty goes to well, well doesn’t go to thirsty. So the only thing is are you thirsty enough! Do you have the burning desire?
“Ok man, so how the hell can we cultivate this burning desire?” I hear you cry.
This is a difficult question to answer. But, there are steps you can take to make sure you will achieve any goal you set for yourself. Like…
Get Your Feet Wet
If you want to start your own online business, don’t wait for the right time to do it. It will never come. Write your letter of resignation, quit your job and commit to your idea; Now that maybe too much for you but by exaggerating things, all I wanna convey is you can’t defeat a giant by reading its weakness in a novel, you will have to actually fight with it to find exactly that spot that will make him fall down.
Hang out with Fellow Successful People
There’s a reason successful people surround themselves with like-minded people. Even if you are the one running the show, their mindset, attitude and lifestyle can influence your attitude and, eventually, your actions; besides the least it will do is that by following successful people you always stay motivated (motivation is important in online world) because every night you go to sleep you will think maybe even for 10 seconds, if he can do it, I can do it too.
Even if you don’t have successful people around physically, follow their blogs, read their shit etc – and for starters, follow my blog 😉
Feed Your Mind
You’ve probably heard about tons of self-help and inspirational books that promise to turn your life completely. According to one famous book, called The Secret, you can achieve success by thinking really hard about it.
That is true if words don’t mean what they mean.I mean I imagined myself as a Jedi my whole life and the Universe still hasn’t turned my wish into reality, so I call BS on this theory.
What I’m tryin’ to say is that you should feed your mind with the information you need to meet your goals, not with silly motivational books. I Googled when I was unable to set a campaign; I Googled when I was unable to install a plugin. I had the burning desire to learn and crack everything up myself. May expand more here.
One Thing at a Time
Back in 200x, I started an online business selling stuff as a graphic designer. I started it in college and by the end of the first year, it was making me about $1,000 a month in profits – a hell of a lot of money for a college kid.
My colleagues were intrigued that I made money selling stuff online, and they would often say to me:
“That’s so amazing, dude. I wish I had a great idea like that!”
You see, these people thought that the only god damn reason they couldn’t start their own online business was because they didn’t have a great idea like mine.
Excuse me while I laugh my pants off!
The reason I could start an online business was because I developed the RIGHT set of skills to do it.
The idea wasn’t that brilliant. My very particular set of skills that I have acquired after working my ass off made the difference. I invested like a year or so to master Photoshop.
What I’m tryin’ to say is that if you want to become successful, you have to become a master in your chosen field. You see, a doctor doesn’t become a renowned neurologist all of a sudden. He takes one thing at a time and studies for years before he can be known as a specialist.
The same goes for you. Pick one subject – maybe SEO, Facebook or Google ads – and become the Yoda of your field.
Treat It with Respect
There’s a saying that goes something like, “Treat your business like a business and it will pay you like one. Treat it like a hobby and it will pay you like one.”
Your online business is a real fucking business.
If you treat it as a hobby, working only when you feel like it, well, my boy, that won’t do it.
You don’t have to be a fucking genius to understand that you’re not going to build your online business if you don’t treat it like a real offline business.
You can’t work on it whenever you find a free moment to squeeze it in.
You need to create a schedule and treat it with discipline.
If you want to grow your online business, you need to know what’s working and what’s not. You need to track results and adjust when things don’t go as planned. Makes sense?
Track things like the conversions, sales, the return on investment, your email open rates and so on.
Go Fund Yourself
Not having the funds to create an online business is probably one of the lamest excuses I hear. I started my business with practically nothing. If I can do, why the hell you can’t.
The problem is that most of the time we get ahead of ourselves, imagining what our project might become before actually doing something. I don’t say you shouldn’t dream big, but you should do it while keepin’ a sense of reality.
And, if you really need big bucks to get going, go fund yourself and pitch your idea to an investor, heck talk to your friends and make ‘em fund your shit.
Don’t Give Up
“People don’t fail at Internet marketing; they simply give up before the magic happens.” Abraham Lincoln (well, possibly)
The truth is that there are people making a good living online. The question that I always hear is “Why not me?” What do others know that I don’t? What do they do that I can’t?
You see, what you really need to grow your online business is dedication.
I know that not seeing the needle move can make you less motivated to get shit done, but believe me, don’t give up before the magic of Internet marketing happens.
An online business takes a helluva of time, especially in the early stages when you are striving to build a steady base of customers and figuring out what works for you.
Lucky for you, I have tons of tips you can use to promote your online business and make money. I don’t mean the “do-nothing-and-make-money” bullshit dream. I mean practical stuff, like how to write spectacular copy or how to create sales pages that don’t bore the boots off your audience. Pay close attention to this stuff and use it to grow your business.
If you wanna know more about this, I highly suggest taking a second and looking around this blog. Or shoot me a question. I’ll gladly answer it.
